Gas Trip Cost Calculator
Gas Trip Cost Formula: Trip Cost = ( Miles Traveled / MPG ) * Cost Per Gallon

Gas Trip Cost Definition
Use our free Gas Trip Calculator to conveniently determine how much gas you’re going to use for your next trip. With the cost of gas, it’s important that you know exactly how much you’re going to spend on your next vacation or business trip. This can help you to create the perfect budget and give you a real idea of just how much you’re going to spend on gas versus the other necessities for your excursion.

Preparing your Budget
Every vehicle on the road is different. What’s more, the kind of mileage that you get often differs than what the manufacturer lists on the sticker, so using that information is useless. You know your vehicle best, so you can best determine just what kind of mileage that you’re getting. Inputting that information into the calculator allows you to easily and quickly get your trip information.
The Gas Trip Cost Calculator requires you to enter in the following information in order to provide you with an accurate gas cost.
  1. How many MPG your vehicle gets
  2. How much gas costs per gallon
  3. The miles that you will be traveling

Because every vehicle gets different miles per gallon in the city versus highway traveling, you may want to create two different scenarios. You’ll want to determine how many miles you will be traveling in the city and how many you’ll be traveling on highways.
For example, if you have a 2002 Dodge Caravan, then you’ll get 22 MPG on the highway and 12 MPG in the city. When you fill out the calculator, you’ll input 22 MPG and then estimate how many highway miles you will be traveling. Make a note of that number and then do the same for 12 MPG and an estimate of how many city miles that you will be traveling. This is the best way to get the closest estimate of your total trip costs.
Once you have inputted your information, the trip cost will appear in a light green box below the calculator. You can use the calculator as many times as needed to get the right data for your trip.

Ways to Save Money on Gas
If you’re unhappy with the total costs for your gas for your upcoming travel, then you’ll want to save money on gas in whatever way that you can. There are several ways that you can save money on your gas.
  1. When driving on the highway, maintain speeds of between 55 and 65 MPH. This will help you to maximize the amount of MPG that you get out of your vehicle.
  2. Keep your tire pressure at factory recommended specs. Remember, different brands and sized tires have different specs.
  3. Make sure that all of your fluids, especially the motor oil and the transmission fluids, are at appropriate levels.
  4. Make sure your oil is fresh and that you have it changed when recommended by your car manufacturer.
  5. Ensure that all of your air conditioning belts are in good working order. This is especially relevant for older vehicles that lose gas efficiency when the air conditioning isn’t working correctly.
  6. Take your vehicle in for regular checkups and pay close attention to the spark plugs.
