Cord Calculator

Cord Definition
Calculating how many cords in the volume of a firewood stack is easy by inputting its dimensions in this calculator. A cord calculator is a helpful tool for any firewood consumer and seller to determine the accurate amount of firewood in a woodpile.
Firewood sold in bulk for heating a home generally has several units of measure. This vast range of units of measure may include rick or face cord, fireplace cord, stove cord, and firewood cord. Even unconventional units such as truck-bed load have been used. Though a rick of wood by standard is a woodpile 4 feet high by 8 feet long, the actual volume will vary depending on the length of its firewood pieces. The amount of firewood in a rick of wood and other cord units is not consistent.
The only consistent firewood unit of measure is the cord or fraction of a cord. Unlike the other measurements mentioned above, a cord of wood is the only one that is an exact quantity and accepted in many locations.
Keep in mind when figuring out the cords in a firewood stack, the logs should be stacked neatly parallel to each other with square corners. If not, some estimating of the dimensions might be needed.

Procedure
  1. Record the dimensions in inches (height, width, and depth) of the stack.
  2. Enter the inches of each dimension in the appropriate box of the calculator.
  3. Click the “Calculate” button to get the total number of cords.

The cord amount will appear in the same calculator window.
Some helpful facts regarding a cord are listed below:
  • A cord is 128 cubic feet of rounds stacked with minimum spacing between logs.
  • A cord may be made up of whole logs or split logs.
  • A cord of firewood is typically a stack measuring 4 feet x 4 feet x 8 feet, hence 128 cubic feet.
  • Any dimensions that add up to 128 cubic feet is considered a full cord.
  • The typical 4x4x8 cord is based on 3 stacks; each 4 feet high, 8 feet long and 16 inches wide.
  • Standard firewood length is 16 inches, thus 3 stacks side by side is 4 feet wide.
